Until the area of "intra workout" nutrition came along, we all just drank water right? or failing that, we drank nothing and just cracked on with training hard. Well times move on, as does science and as it does, we need to accept that we were probably all missing some golden windows of opportunity in how to best take advantage of a variety of hormonal climates within then body.

1- During a workout, amino acids, including branched chain amino acids (BCAA), supply up to 15% of a muscle's energy needs.

2- This use of BCAAs can go up by 500%, depending on the intensity and the duration of exercise.

It used to be that body builders would have a big meal 2 hours before training and then a big liquid protein and carb drink immediately after. This theory works fine and until we knew any better, was about the best we could do. But as science develops and the understanding of targeted muscle building windows progresses, we have realised that there are times of any given day, when we can make huge differences to our muscle building, recovery and performance, by timing our macro nutrient intake. The biggest opportunity isn't breakfast (That was kind of a fallacy) it is around the training window- pre/intra/post. One is not great without the other two and two without the third is fine, but not as good as all three.

By ingesting the right type of protein before and during a workout, you minimize the cannibalism of muscle. This is really the biggest part of trying to build muscle, holding on to the damned stuff. BCAA dosage – to what pay attention? Consider the type of physical activity and its intensity. If you practice extremely hard, take the higher dose of BCAA - the more you practice, the higher dose you should take. Remember not to exceed the recommended amount of amino acids (from 0,5 g to 1 g powder per 10 kg weight).

BCAA is best to take around one hour before and a quarter after training.

BCAA dosage – how about no-training days? Then take BCAA in the morning on an empty stomach and before sleep.
